The goal | Students should learn the artificial insemination of domestic and wild animals, laboratory and exotic animals and deepen knowledge gained from basic studies; to be able to work on the artificial insemination and cryopreservation of sperm; to efficiently use knowledge from previously mastered courses regarding artificial insemination and cryopreservation. | |||
The outcome | Detailed knowledge of the reproductive physiology in domestic and wild mammals, birds and fish, principles of use artificial insemination and cryobiology of sperm in order to increase reproduction of animals ; detailed knowledge of the oestrus cycle, oestrus signs, collection of sperm and insemination techiques; specificity of reproduction and insemination in cattle, equids, pigs, sheep and goats, carnivores, poultry, fish, insects and bee queens. | |||

Contents of lectures | The history and importance of artificial insemination, the methods of sperm collection, the sperm count, sperm characteristics regarding to species, sperm quality examination, sperm morphology, sperm storage and dilution, sperm metabolism, classical sperm preservation, deep freezing of sperm, sperm transport, insemination techniques, basic knowledge on estrus detection, embryo transfer, molecular biology of reproduction, reproductive genetics, gonadal development, genital aspects of reproductive functions and control of reproduction, spermatogenesis, duration of spermatogenesis in certain animal species, management of sperm collection, separation techniques of X and Y spermatozoa and their differences, sperm karyotype. | |||
Contents of exercises | Induction of estrus, ovum collection (surgical and non-surgical method), sperm collection from bulls, rams, boars stallions and dog, examination and evaluation of sperm, dilution and freezing of semen from bull and boar. Artificial insemination in cows, pigs, sheep, birds and fish. | |||

Methods of teaching | Teaching methods: Theoretical teaching with interactive learning, using audio-visual methods (PowerPoint presentations, films), practical exercises in healthy and sick animals and practical work at the Clinic for reproduction, fertiliity and AI, as well as on farms of cows, sheep and pigs. | |||
