The goal | Acquiring knowledge about nutrients and their classification, methods of production, processing and preservation of animal feed, and the factors that influence feed spoilage, on the impact of hygiene and chemical composition of feedstuffs and feed on the health status and performance of different product categories and species as well as the quality of food of animal origin. | |||
The outcome | 1. Recognize the conditions under which it feed might spoil as well as to recognize the changes in a case when changes already occurred. 2. Define the degree of change in the quality of the feed and its impact on health and production performances of animals fed such feed. 3. Be able to detect irregularities and problems that occur as a consequence of inadequate nutrition. | |||

Contents of lectures | Storage of feed for animals. Preservation of feed. Processing of feed. Deterioration and harmfulness of feed for animals: physical, chemical and biological factors. The importance of bacteria and molds. Parasites feed. Feed poisoning: mycotoxins, organic poisons, inorganic matters. The regulations on the maximum allowable harmful and prohibited substances in animal feed. | |||
Contents of exercises | Sampling protocols. Organoleptic inspection. Determination of feed usability. Fundamentals of analytical procedures: chemical, mycotoxicological and bacteriological analyses. | |||

Methods of teaching | Interactive learning by means of audio-visual methods (PowerPoint presentation, video presentations), essay papers. Practical work in the Laboratory of Department of Nutrition and Botany, practical field work (feed producing plants and farms). | |||
